Midway through December, I started experimenting with a Nikon Coolpix L19 point-and-shoot digital camera (I really wish the timestamp hadn’t reminded me it dates back to 2009). Around the same time, the little seedling in my mind that eventually developed into this Substack was growing. Ultimately, I decided that I was going to carry around the pricey camera and shoot photos of my everyday life.
I intend to do this monthly, and I will post the images right here. This is what December 2024 ended up looking like.
The temptation to edit all of these photos ran high. I’ve been living in Lightroom and Skylum since I started bouncing around the city with my Fujifilm x100f a couple years ago.
When I started taking a closer look at them, however, I started to notice a few things. For one, these were taken in winter in New England. The point-and-shoot worked marvelously to capture the cold, in my opinion, even on sun-soaked days.
In terms of shooting, the only adjustments I made on the camera in a few instances pertained to the auto white balance options. For example, I switched to “Incandescent” while indoors.
I realized I had auto-flash turned on after taking a few photos, but it had not fired just yet. Very rarely do I use flash, in general, so I consciously decided to turn it off for the remainder of the month.
I think that the lack of flash almost helped emphasize the time of day in which some of these shots were taken.

Maybe January won’t look so bleak.
